Trent Concrete wins precast structural and cladding contract for John Rylands Library in Manchester
Trent Concrete has won the contract for a combined precast concrete structural and cladding scheme for a project to extend the University of Manchester's John Rylands Library on Wood Street in Manchester.
Trent's £396k contract with Linford Building Limited covers structural flooring units, edge beams, GRC (glass reinforced concrete) column casings and stair case units, and on site work starts in November.
In detail, the special coffered floor slabs include 684m2 in a grey ex-mould finish and 315m2 in a white acid etched reconstructed stone finish, with each slab typically 4.3m long by 2.5m wide. In addition Trent will produce 32 GRC column casing units and 84 linear metres of edge beams typically 4.5m long and 800mm wide, both in a white reconstructed stone to match the floor units, together with grey concrete stair case units. The white units will be used in the public areas of the library extension, and the high quality ex-mould finish will be left untreated saving further trades. The grey units will be used in other areas such as storerooms.
The project is receiving more than £8 million in grant-aid from the Heritage Lottery Fund and over £3 million from the European Union.
