Trent Concrete wins combined structural and architectural contract for Dublin apartment project

Trent Concrete has been awarded a major contract for a combined structural and architectural precast concrete scheme on a new apartment development on Finglas Road in Dublin.

Trent's contract of approximately 14m Euros covers a 30,000 square metre cross wall frame system covering a total floor area of around 37,000m2, 7,300 square metres of external cladding, 2,400 linear metres of external party walls and 2,700 linear metres of balconies.

"We had an open mind on the structural solution, and as part of the tender process invited specialist contractors to offer their ideas," explains Chris Timmins, Contracts Manager at McCabe Builders. "Trent's solution to precast the entire building was the simplest and offered several major advantages. Firstly it gave us a one-stop shop, and minimised the number of trades and operatives on site. This results in a more controllable situation, as well as a safer site operation. We were also on quite a tight programme, and Trent's solution means that we can go from ground level to a watertight eight-storey envelope in just 21 weeks. In addition there are big cost savings, as well as safety and operational benefits, in being able to dispense with scaffolding. Trent was the only specialist contractor that could offer grey, decorative and structural concrete as one package."

The external cladding includes 4,000m2 of terracotta-faced panels featuring a blue/black coloured tile and 1,000m2 of reconstructed Portland stone units. An additional 2,300m2 of Hardwall(TM) insulated sandwich panel cladding is also being used structurally on the gable ends, again featuring a combination of terracotta-faced and reconstructed stone external finishes with the inner faces acting in the same way as the cross wall panels. The party walls and balconies are both in a reconstructed Portland stone finish to match the cladding.

Trent started on site in September on a 60-65 week programme on the 7 buildings at the development, which will accommodate a total of 540 apartments.

Trent has also recently worked on the following projects: Mays Meadow and Donegall Square in Northern Ireland, office developments at Sandyford, an extension to University College Cork, a mixed use development in Waterford and the new headquarters for Limerick County Council in the Republic of Ireland.
