Trent Concrete to clad podium of Beetham Tower Manchester
Trent Concrete has recently been awarded the contract to clad the podium of the 47-storey Beetham Tower, the tallest structure in Manchester and the highest living space in the UK. The building, designed by Ian Simpson Architects, will incorporate residential and office space as well as a 5 star hotel.
The four-storey podium at the base of the tower (forming the public rooms of the hotel) will be clad in 2400 square metres of highly polished black reconstructed stone panels. The 235 panels are over 4 metres in height and typically 3 metres long, and will be cast with an intricate and random pattern of vertical and horizontal grooves.
The mix will incorporate a combination of aggregates, including black Clee Hill basalt and green Criggion granite. These colour variations combined with the polished finish will catch the light in dramatic fashion. The architects specified precast for its "monolithic" quality, and to reflect the urban context of the tower.
The £155m, 155 metre high glass tower on Deansgate in Manchester is the third to be built by developers Beetham, and will combine 219 apartments, 6,500 square metres of quality office space and a 285 bed Hilton hotel.
Trent Concrete starts on site in January 2005 for a 10-week programme, with the overall development due for completion in Summer 2006.
