Trent Concrete to clad Citygate Development in Newcastle
Trent Concrete has secured the £1.3m cladding contract from the Hanro Group for two adjoining buildings in Newcastle, following on from its work at the Quayside development in the city also with AMEC.
The reconstructed stone cladding is to a six-storey office building and a seven-storey prestigious residential development on St. James Boulevard opposite the Newcastle football stadium. Trent's contract covers the design, manufacture and erection of a total of 714 panels forming a spandrel and mullion combination to glazed areas, and incorporating large flat panels to flank and gable sections. Precast concrete was specified in preference to the original brick design for reasons of design and erection speed.
The client and architect visited several completed Trent projects, and were particularly impressed with the Dacre Street refurbishment in London. Indeed, photos of Dacre Street, demonstrating the quality of the precast and the crisp lines achieved, were used in securing planning permission for this development. The majority of the cladding is in an acid-etched reconstructed Portland stone, with low level plinths in a shallow-etched grey mix incorporating mica sand for extra sparkle, and additional small areas in a dark grey mix to match the glazing panels.
Trent worked successfully with AMEC on a previous office building in the Quayside development at Newcastle, and hopes to negotiate further contracts for another two buildings planned on the same site as the current projects.
