Trent secures follow-on contract at Trafford Centre

Trent Concrete has secured the contract for a new portico entrance at The Trafford Centre in Manchester, following on from its extensive work at the retail development when it was built 8 years ago.

The portico will form the new main entrance to The Trafford Centre once the original colonnade is enclosed and integrated with the main shopping centre.

Trent's £411k contract covers 4 sets of double columns and 4 single columns, each measuring 1300mm in diameter and 6.4m high, and a 1220mm deep cornice running between the columns. These columns are in buff reconstructed stone with terracotta rings, to match the existing colonnade. Trent's package also includes a flat hollow core concrete roof between the single columns at the side of the portico, and a domed GRP (glass reinforced plastic) roof between the central double columns.

Trent was awarded the contract based on its previous successful cladding and structural work at The Trafford Centre, where precast was used extensively and Trent's contract grew to double the original value totalling over £8m.

Trent starts on site in March on an 8 week programme.
