Glossary P Terms

Panelisation

Determining panel sizes and configuration, thus determining joint positions. The panelisation is to meet the architect's intent, while producing panels that can be lifted within the capacity of the site cranes. Generally the objective is to have as few panels as possible since fewer panels take less time to fix. This creates an earlier dry enclosure and costs less.

Partnering

A concept formalised by Sir Michael Latham where key team members for a building project are appointed early, including the specialist contractors. This promotes a no blame, non-confrontational environment. The benefits to all, including the client, are considerable.

Pigmenting

Colour stable oxide base pigments made specifically to pigment concrete. Trent has 70+ years experience with proprietary pigments. See the sample library.

Pilasters

Non-structure vertical cladding features. See Ebury House, where pilasters were applied to conceal panel to panel joints.

Polished, Polishing

Mechanically ground and polished concrete. The degree of polish depends on the nature and grading of the aggregates because the cement matric will be smooth but not polished.

Polysulphide

A joint sealant material in one part or two parts. It was extensively used in the 1960s and 1970s but has been overtaken by silicone, which has a greater MAF (movement accommodation factor) and longer life expectancy.

Porosity

All of Trent's concrete mixes have very low porosity. Porosity is measured by equipment to undertake the ISAT test (Initial Surface Absorption Test).

Portland Stone

Natural stone from Portland Bill. There are several grades, the best of which is Whit Bed.

Pre-encased

Structural steel can be cased in concrete at the Trent factory.

Priming

Silicone joints on materials which are absorbent should have the contact surfaces treated with the sealant manufacturer's primer.

Procurement

The process of buying the services of Trent and other specialists.

Programme

See Master Programme and MDI.

Provisional Order

The status we place on projects for which we have been issued a Letter of Intent.
